Needleless Lip Filler: What It Is & How It Compares to Injectables

Lip fillers without needles? Yes, please. The Hyaluron Pen and other needle-free filler devices are here to make lip filler less painful, more affordable, and exquisitely precise. Discover how needleless lip filler compares to its injectable counterpart in terms of cost, results, and longevity.

WHAT IS NEEDLELESS LIP FILLER?

Needleless lip filler, also called needle-free filler, is an injection method for dermal fillers that uses a handheld device to deliver the product into your skin. Rather than a needle, devices of this type use highly pressurized air to penetrate the skin and flow filler into the lips.

Our needleless filler delivery system of choice is the Hyaluron Pen, which makes lip filler available at a fraction of the cost of traditional dermal fillers. The Hyaluron Pen penetrates the top layer of the skin sans needle and flows product into lips, delivering filler with extreme precision and accuracy. An experienced professional can achieve using the Hyaluron Pen—lips that are full yet natural-looking—with exquisite shape and symmetry.

Though highly competent aesthetic practitioners can wield needleless lip filler devices skillfully to achieve incredible results, at-home use of filler pens like this one is always a no-no.

Over the course of several treatments, Desiree was able to increase lip fullness significantly, while maintaining the natural beauty of this client’s pout.

TRADITIONAL FILLERS VS. NEEDLELESS FILLERS

Injectable fillers, also called dermal fillers, are an FDA-approved medical treatment used to create a beautiful, full pout in the lips. The Hyaluron Pen, a needleless lip filler device, has gained popularity over the past few years as a zero-downtime alternative to dermal fillers.

Both traditional and needleless lip fillers use a protein compound called Hyaluronic Acid (HA)—a substance naturally produced by the body and capable of holding 1,000 times its weight in water. Think of HA as the body's natural moisturizer and lubricant since it helps keep your skin feeling hydrated and looking youthful.

Whether you receive HA fillers with or without a needle, the end goal is to increase the volume of the area treated. That being said, there are some crucial differences between the two filler delivery systems.

These are the most significant differences between the Hyaluron Pen vs. traditional needle lip injections.

  • Needle-free fillers are less expensive.

  • A quality needleless filler device is extremely precise.

  • The Hyaluron Pen is less painful and more comfortable, both during and after treatment.

  • Needleless fillers are associated with fewer typical side effects, like swelling and bruising.

  • In the hands of an experienced professional, the Hyaluron Pen is a lower-risk approach to lip fillers—with virtually no risk of infection or occlusion.

  • Because HA for needle-free fillers does not need to contain lidocaine to numb pain, there is no risk of an allergic reaction.

PRECISION OF DELIVERY

The hyaluron lip pen delivers hyaluronic acid into the superficial epidermal layers using a high-pressure jet injector. Hyaluronic acid is then converted into nano-scale molecules, which allows the HA to be equally distributed in very small amounts.

In the hands of a skilled professional, a well-made needle-free device allows the provider to dial in the exact amount of filler before the device even touches the skin. This means that your injector can deliver a pre-measured serving of filler each time, allowing for unparalleled precision and accuracy.

Plus, needle-free lip filler means you walk away with gorgeous, impeccably filled lips, with less pain and no downtime.

Traditional dermal fillers use a needle to penetrate all the way into the middle layers of the skin. Fillers injected at this depth spark a chain reaction beginning with increased collagen production, which prolongs results.

When using a needle, your injector is factoring in the needle’s angle, depth, and pressure while watching the unit measurements on the syringe. This means that the smallest amount of filler that can be delivered in a single deposit is the smallest amount your injector is capable of perceiving and delivering. Rather than an exact amount dialed in beforehand, an injector using a needle is eye-balling filler amounts.

Because this more profound injection depth creates a greater trauma to the skin, you will likely experience swelling, sometimes significant swelling, that lasts 72 hours or more. Some people also have bruising at the injection site, which is especially true when receiving traditional fillers in the lips.

LONGEVITY

How long does the Hyaluron Pen last? Typically, needleless lip filler results last for around 3-8 months, but this depends on a few factors, including hydration levels for the 2 weeks after your treatment.

Most injectable fillers last 6-12 months when used in the lips, though the longevity of traditional dermal fillers differs based on the type of product and several other factors.

That being said, the hyaluronic acid filler we use at FACE is similar to Juvederm Kyss, so the life span of the filler is about the same with both needle and needleless filler.

One of our favorite things about Hyaluron Pen needleless lip fillers is that the longevity of your filler is cumulative. With a base filler built up over several treatments, you can achieve the gorgeous pout you seek, with results that last longer and longer with each treatment.

With any type of filler, your body’s unique rate of metabolism impacts the life of the product. Exposure to high heat in saunas or other settings can impact the longevity of your lip fillers, as can high salt intake and dehydration.

For best results, stay well-hydrated before and after treatment. Since hyaluronic acid holds 1,000 times its weight in water, the more water in your system, the more dramatic your filler results will be.

Besides staying hydrated with water and electrolytes, eat a healthy diet, including foods rich in vitamin K. Think leafy greens like spinach and kale.

COST

In addition to safety and professional expertise, cost is one of the most significant factors when considering whether or not to pursue a cosmetic treatment.

Not only are needleless fillers less painful with little to no downtime, but they are also more affordable than traditional injectable lip fillers.

HA VOLUME COST WITH HYALURON PEN COST WITH TRADITIONAL FILLER
0.50 mL $200 $400 - $650
1 mL $349 $650 - $1,000
2 mL $649 $1,200 - $2,000

At FACE, the cost for 0.5 mL of hyaluronic acid gel is $200, compared to $400-$600 for Volbella—a traditional filler packaged in 0.55 mL syringes.

A full 1 mL of HA gel costs $349 at FACE. Compare this to $650-$850 for the same volume in injectable fillers.

Finally, FACE charges $649 for 2 mL of HA gel, compared to $1,200-$2,000 for dermal fillers of the same volume.

RESULTS

A well-made needle-free filler device will allow your aesthetic professional to pre-set the amount of product delivered before the device ever touches your skin. In fact, your practitioner can set the device to an amount less than 0.01 mL to shape and fill lips with remarkable precision.

When injecting filler with a needle, the results are less precise because of the near-impossibility of eyeballing amounts so skillfully. Even the most skilled injector cannot eyeball filler amounts with the precision and accuracy of the Hyaluron Pen.

Both Hyaluron Pen lip filler and traditional fillers provide immediate results—but there is an important difference. You can expect to walk out of your Hyaluron Pen appointment with fuller, sexier lips with little to no downtime. In contrast, treatment with traditional fillers is painful, and many people experience significant swelling that can last 72 hours or more.

Since the injection depth is more superficial, the results of the Hyaluron Pen may not last as long as dermal fillers. That being said, the beauty of needle-free fillers is that your practitioner can build up your desired results over the course of several treatments. Not only will this allow you to increase the fullness of your lips, but it also increases the longevity of the product and the duration of your results.
